Full Version: Letter from Bruce Cusick - Wants To Hear From the Fans

Below is an email I got from Bruce Cusick, the new PA guy for the Swarm. Actually, he was the PA guy in the Swarm's first year, also. Bruce wants to meet as many fans of the team as possible, before and after games and he is eager for input on how to better serve the fans of The Hive. So help out Bruce here on the boards and feel free to approach him at the games with what you think.

QUOTE
Hi John! Bruce Cusick here-PA guy for the Swarm. I found your email and wanted to give you a shout. First of all, after reading your bio I got from Howard, I want to say thank you very much for your service in the military-I've had relatives serve and I don't think they ever heard thank yous enough from people.

Also, I love the Hive and how passionate all of you are for the Swarm. I wish that they could have given us the time to get you great fans more involved in the game during the Swarm's first year when I was there. After the game the other night I was fortunate enough to chat with some of the members and I think it's awesome that they had some great ideas that they'd like to see in the game. That's part of the reason that I wanted to get in touch with you. I'd love to meet as many members as possible, maybe before or on Friday, and to get you guys more involved during the game. You guys are the foundation and "fan-atics" of the Swarm. It was a blast getting back into the swing of things with the game of Lacrosse on Friday night, and for them to play like that for the opener was fantastic! I've read some things on the message boards and I think everyone realizes that it's a whole new production crew getting their feet wet and things should only get better. With all the things that goes on behind the scenes, it's almost like starting from scratch in a way. We are all adding and trying to implement new ideas-like "who's that goaltender!"--yes, of course I beat that up pretty hard because that's one of the things that I want to start doing only for great saves, but had to do it quite a bit to make it obvious that it's not just a one game thing. I've spent many hours going through funny movie clips and having them down loaded into the Excel's system to play during the right moments and we just have to have the Excel's staff get used to that system too. We want to do "visiting coaches cam" when time allows, we would like to incorporate individual fun things for the players, like one of the member's ideas for Morgan-it was a great idea! I've already talked to Rudy about it, who does the music and sound effects. I didn't like reading that you guys were "blown off" in the past when you tried passing on ideas. I think that you guys should get involved and be acknowledged in the crowd some how. I think it's important that other fans new to the game know you're out there. After doing the Viking's game yesterday, and seeing, hearing and feeling what the crowd can do for each other as well as the energy that the crowd gives the team, is what home field advantage is all about. I think the crowd definitely helped the team win Friday and I think it's important that we get you guys to be a part of the game experience because I think it can even be more energized with your help!

Give me a shout back and I look forward to meeting you.

Bruce Cusick

Give Bruce an account and let him join in the fun.

That's great that Bruce want's the input from the fans. I will be watching more closely to see what videos they use and trying to listen for the sound effects. Sitting closer to the glass makes it difficult to hear anything. Some of you mention the songs they play after goals and I have no idea what you are talking about. I can't hear anything. Maybe it's the crowd yelling that covers up the music or maybe I'm not focusing on the music enough.
MrsMcSwarmFan
It's awesome that Bruce wants to get us involved.

One suggestion I have is if there are new crowd-participation things he wants to do, he should contact us ahead of time. We are fairly well-distributed around the stadium, so if we know what we're supposed to do, we can help "educate" those around us.
niknak
I think it's awesome that Bruce is coming to us. Very cool. A much appreciated departure from Rusty for sure.

I think the one thing we need to come up with is a good, signature Swarm chant/cheer.

We had the threads last year Here and here talking about possible new crowd participation things.

The "So what?" "Who Cares?" thing after opponent goals thing caught on pretty well last year.

I like the PATTERSON! Thing.

Still, we nee a signature Swarm cheer. Something we can use like Philly's "W-I-N-G-S WINGS!" cheer. A good battle of the sides kinda thing.

The best I could come up with was adapting Swarm Fan's idea of a call and response kinda thing:

Call: "WE ARE?"
Crowd: "THE HIVE!"
Call: "WE SAY?"
Crowd: "GO SWARM!"

Seemed to me last year the hardest part about getting cheers going was finding the right time to start em. Usually either the game people are talking, or there's music playing on the PA. Now that we have an announcer that will work with us I think it could be pretty awesome.

Oh and Chips and Guac. I don't care if Chipotle's not the sponsor. That cheer stopped being about Chipotle after that awesome game. It's still an epic piece of Swarm history.

Agreed! And why can't we get Chipotle to be a sponsor? Come on Chipotle guys, pony up a small amount of cash to get your name out! You don't even need to do burrito drops or anything! smile.gif

Bruce tracked down my email and dropped me a line as well. Definitely sounds like he has more planned. He's also wondering what sections everyone sits in. I know a few of your sections, but not all. Where y'all sitting?
niknak
Ok, so it sounds like the "We Are?" Chant is going to go live. Bruce likes it and he's even having the scoreboard guy make graphics for it!

So yeah, how bout it Fro Bros? You wanna have a battle of the sides?

I'm practically right next to his booth. Sec 103, Row 24, seats 5-8.

As for a cheer proposal, this might be a bit longer/more sophisticated than what Bruce has in mind, but there's no reason we couldn't do this on our own initiative. I was at a Minnesota Thunder (RIP) game last season where the supporters' section did a cheer song to the tune of the Beastie Boys' "Girls". It was called, you guessed it, "Goals". How about a Swarm/lax version of it?

GOALS
All we really want is Goals
In every quarter we want Goals
While killing penalties, Goals
And on the power play
Goals from all our forwards, Goals from our defenders
Goals on the transition, Goals, even the 'tender
Goals
Against the [insert opposing team here] we want Goals
All through the season we want Goals
And in the playoffs we want Goals
I oughta whip out my
Goals... Goals... Goals... Goals...
Goals... Goals... Goals... Goals...
GOALS!!!

We so need to get someone that sounds like the beastie boys to sign this and get it on MP3. It would definitely be a great Goal song!

How long would this take to get through? By the time you get halfway there could be two more goals scored. This might work for halftime/beginning of the third quarter, but may be too long for after a goal.

I think we should do Corpsy's "DEAD!" cheers on intros for the other team.

I think he should add the various clever nicknames to the intros (ie. "Eric the Baby-faced Assassin PACEYYYYYY").

Very cool news...it will be interesting to see how it goes over...We sit in section 116 with you Nik, so we will be loud when Bruce plays this...don't give up on it the first couple of times, it will take a couple games for people to catch on I think...thank you, Bruce for accepting our ideas!!!

I didn't have it in mind as an after-goal song, rather during timeouts and other breaks in the action. As far as I could tell, the Thunder supporters would do their version of the song (and all their other cheers, for that matter) pretty much whenever they felt like it.

I'm going to hand out a chant guide as best I can. That got people going pretty well last year. And Bruce is on board and will be helping, i think it'll go well!

I watched the game online tonight and here are my thoughts ( i know it doesnt really count, not being in person)

who are these clowns running the show? I have been to 4+games every year but watching it tonight, it was kind of embarrassing.

Majority of the game it looked like a Division 3/high school game. a band?? seriously!? High school aged kids running the pa systems? lots of empty green seats.

Great game to watch though.

The band is the Minnesota Brass and Bugle Corp. One of the best in the Country. The PA is being done by Bruce Cusick (sp?). The 'high school aged kids' are Casey Carlson and Jonathan (can't remember his last name). Bruce did the PA during the first season and is getting back into the groove. Give him some time. Casey and Jonathan pretty much handle the in-crowd stuff. Games, trivia, that sort of thing.

They were better tonight than last week and should be getting better as the season continues.

Yes, much better than last week.

Bruce is working hard to get the fans into the action and I think its working. Even though the attendance was only 8000+, it was louder than many games with 12000. I loved Rusty as an announcer, but looking back, I fell more like I was an audience for his comedy act. With Bruce, I feel more like a participant.

The Swarm Band was better tonight, too. Furing the first game the transitions between live band and recorded music was not very seamless. Tonight the band and the rest of the production staff seemed to have worked out a lot of the kinks. Also, last week I could hardly hear the band when they did "The Incredible" theme. This week they sounded a lot louder and more confident.

The CW Krew got a little better this week, but I'm still not loving them yet.

I would like to see SPT members in the stands handing out prizes like in previous years.

MrsMcSwarmFan
And the attendance was probably down a bit because the weather was pretty bad. We had an ice storm coming and the roads weren't fun after the game.
wildheadtatt
The weather and probably because it was another Friday game which brings attendance down a bit. I'm hoping the next three games, all on Saturday, will draw at least 11K per game.
kevlax72
I am actually enjoying Bruce. What like about him is he doesn't mispeak about LAX. He doesn't just make stuff up.

The one thing I would like to hear him do is get people on their feet at the beginning- when the players come on the field. I think that might pump it up a bit. Other wise keep up the good work.

I noticed this also. I'm sure he will read this and work that into the next game.
niknak
Micing the band this week was a good move. It made them fit in a lot better. Last week without the mic they were far to quiet and it really just distracted. This week much much better.

I still do think that Casey and Joanthan don't quite seem comfortable doing their thing. They did seem a bit better though and I'm sure it'll keep improving.

As for attendance, they did have very little walk up ticketing. I'd say the crappy weather on a Friday night just killed it.

I don't see where the high school aged kids running the PA came from. I met the dudes running that and I'm pretty sure the youngest of them hasn't seen high school in 20 years.

I sure he was referring to Casey and Jonathan. Jonathan by the way is pretty cool. I talked to him at the Bowling Bash and he said they are getting a better feel for the game and crowd atmosphere. Hopefully by the Feb 13th or 20th game they will have found their groove.

I tried talking to Casey but she was either busy or didn't feel like chatting much.

Yeah, I did get to talk to both of them and they both said they're working on it. Running around and trying to find different places and where to be takes some getting used to. They said they were getitng the hang of the game-day format. Finding that right balance of fun, silly, yet professional is tough. So I'm sure it will get better!

Agreed. One comment that I have about the band is that I wish they would play more recognizable music. Most of the time, they were playing something, but I had no clue what the song was (except the Incredible's theme... which they seemed to play a couple times). I'd really love to hear some Eye of the Tiger or something along those lines... traditional Pep band stuff.

I'm not too keen on the "Peachy Keen Twins" either-- they should have the guys that are healthy scratched and not playing doing the PA stuff. Or at the very least one PSA from the Roller girls.

I think when they announce the opponents we should all hold up our programs in front of our faces (like in Mystery, Alaska) and play game show music. Or something like the theme from "A Summer Place".

I like the nicknaming the Swarm teammates- but i bet they have their own nicknames for eachother- Bruce should find out what they are and use them, use them, use them.

I like the goalie chant and the Hive and Swarm Chant but we do need a goal song. And i STILL like my idea of TICK TICK TICK BOOM by the Hives.

Yeah, the slingshots haven't been working all too well. They need to roll up the shirts a little tighter.

I know... but they're too chirpy- they remind me of Will Farrell and what's her name when they did the cheerleading skit on SNL - IDKY it's just me probably- but they do. Maybe they'll settle into their roles as the season goes on. We sat by them at the Headwaters on opening night. We didn't know they ere part of the "crew" until we saw them on the big screen.

Yeah, hopefully they'll grow into it.

On a different note, the Swarm are actually making nice, professional signs for the SPT to help us with the "WE ARE?" chant. Sounds like they'll have a couple extra sets for me and possibly some more. Maybe the Fros? Gotta take care of them though because they're a little pricey to have made.

We are right above the penalty box for the opposing (LOSING) team. Section 103, row 6 here. I too miss 'chips & guac'. Also, the goofy music played when the opposing (LOSING) team comes on the field. battle of the sides with a chant would be good. We are one section to the right of the fro bros and will accept any spirit/chant challenge from across the field (LOSING SIDE). tongue.gif

heck yeah, do the BB Polka at any of the TV or TO breaks and get the crowd dancing. If you can get Bruce to intro it with "Come on Swarm Fans, get out of your seats and POLKA!" or something fun it would be perfect. Something a little different from "The Bird" but gets people up and having fun just the same.

BTW, I'm glad they Mic-ed you guys up. Definitely helps keep the audio flow of the game much more intact. Keep up the good work.

I think that song is popular in all the WCHA schools, I know at MTU it was extremely popular
I know ours had different lyrics after the first verse or 2, iirc we had 47 verses...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzIDG6HCtuk

Lyrics as follows (at least a few verses)
No Beer!

In Heaven there is no beer.
That’s why we drink it here.
And when we’re gone from here,
Our friends will be drinking all our beer.

In Heaven there is no snow.
That’s why we want to go.
And when it’s ten below,
Our friends will be freezing in the snow.

In Heaven there are no refs,
But here they’re blind and deaf.
And when we all have left,
Our friends will be BITCHIN’ AT THE REFS.

In Heaven there are no bones.
Who make those awful tones.
And when we all have flown
No one will be listenin’ to the bones.

In Heaven there is no sex.
That’s why we use “Brand X”.
And when we hit the decks,
Our friends will be having all our sex.

And many more…
