2009 NLL Entry Draft - Wednesday, September 9 at 6:00 pm CST in Buffalo, New York The commish, George Daniel, has made his first twitter post announcing that the NLL Entry Draft will be on September 9 in Buffalo, New York. With the third pick in the draft, the choices the Swarm may pick are Cliff Smith, Garrett Billings, Ilija Gajic and Zack Greer Remember, Marty likes lefthanders. Rochester has the first two picks in the draft and they will probably choose Sid Smith and Cody Jamieson (if he declares) or Zack Greer (if Jamieson doesn't declare). Here are a couple differently formatted lists of players that may be drafted next month with a link on each with some info: http://www.swarmitup.com/2009EDParticipants.htm http://www.swarmitup.com/2009EDParticipantsPictureRoster.htm I believe the Swarm have these picks (still need confirmation):

Gajic and Cliff Smith are having great playoff series for the Bellies out in the WLA...Gajic's stock certainly has been helped by his performance in the playoffs. I would not be surprised to see him go as high as #3.

Does anyone know why Toronto gets to keep Portland's pick at #7, but Chicago's old #1 pick is at the end of the draft? I'm guessing because Portland finished the season last year and therefore the standing can be calculated, but Chicago did not...so are any future Portland picks still out there?

Does anyone know why Toronto gets to keep Portland's pick at #7, but Chicago's old #1 pick is at the end of the draft? I'm guessing because Portland finished the season last year and therefore the standing can be calculated, but Chicago did not...so are any future Portland picks still out there? http://www.nllinsider.com/2009/05/22/first...try-draft-math/ The above article should be able to help out with some stuff. This article came out before Portland folded. QUOTE As with other grounded franchises in the past, the NLL simply voids any picks they would have owned, whether that’s their natural or traded for picks. Once you deal a player or pick, they’re gone no matter what happens to the other team (unless you’re the Arizona Sting sorta). And then the seventh pick is actually Portland’s original grab, but the Rock nailed it down in a move with Edmtonon when they shipped off Ryan Benesch and Derek Suddons to the Rush. Edmonton owned the Jax’s pick since the ‘08 trade deadline via the Matt Disher trade. And the last questioned pick, the 12th one in the draft, comes from Hamley trading Andrew Biers to San Jose at this year’s trade deadline. The pick was actually one the Stealth picked up from Chicago in the big keeper swap that saw Anthony Cosmo sent back East to Chicago and Roik to Cali. Unlike Philly, who can’t get back what they already gave away in their dealings with the defunct Shamrox, the Stealth are still entitled to something to keep the trade scales even. Since the Shamrox were inactive this year, in previous years when that’s happened, that pick is simply plugged in as the last pick of the first round. All the picks Portland had in their possession went away when they went away, so everyone else moved up. Portland had nine picks in what was a 71 pick draft at the time. The pick at #7 still is kept by Toronto at that spot because Portland was part of the league last year, ergo seeded for this year's draft. Since Chicago didn't play last year, they can't be seeded for this year's draft and anyone that holds their picks in this draft through a trade will be able to use them at the end of the round that pick was in. |

I will be watching for two things during the draft this year...
1) Does Marty think that this is the Swarm's year and trade future picks and/or current depth for some high profile players and picks (like maybe Lewis Ratcliff or another high 1st rounder) 2) Do the Swarm veer slightly away from the theory that the team doesn't need stars and go after a proven clutch finisher with size like Doyle, Grant, Dawson, Powell? Are they willing to pay the price to get someone like that and are they available? Or will they stock up through the draft on players like that (Cliff Smith, Carlton Schuss, etc) in hopes that one of them will develop into that guy that can take over a game at the end... Those are the two things I will be watching... |
