Edmonton selected forward Andy Secore with pick 5 then trades him to Minnesota for Matt Disher.

Swarm get everything they needed...added offensive punch, goaltending and a big defenseman...irony is that Mike Grimes was a pick we traded to AZ for Cousins and Culp I think...I knew this day was coming soon, but I will miss Disher...

Looks like the Chicago rivalry just got more intense...they added Self, Plunkett, Boyle, and Lazore...while they lost Woods, looks like they did very well. Those will be an intense 4 games...

Your right, Swarm Fan. Those Shamrox games will be fantastic.

D-L-Mike Grimes

Mike Grimes on Pointstreak

Born: 3/15/86

Height: 6-3
Weight: 210

Born in: Peterborough, ON

Plays for Burnaby BCLA Jr. A

Drafted: Arizona 1st Round Pick 6 in 2006

Arizona's top pick in 2006. That pick used to belong to Minnesota but became the Sting's in the following trade:

QUOTE
11/05/2004
ARIZONA STING: Traded forward Chad Culp and defenseman Ryan Cousins and to the Minnesota Swarm in exchange for defenseman Brock Robertson and their first round selection in the 2006 Entry Draft.

After all the rigarmole, we only lost Brock Robertson.

2006 Entry Draft Prospects

QUOTE
Mike Grimes - Peterborough Lakers
Mike Grimes enters the draft after helping lead the Peterborough Lakers Junior A squad to a Minto Cup this season. Through the regular season to the championship, the six-foot-three, 210 pound defender played 39 games and scored 10 goals, 25 assists for 35 points.

Games:11
Goals:1
Assists:3
Points:4

Original Request to Transfer to Burnaby

Appeal

Grimes moved out to B.C. this year to work for an electric company but in order to play out there, he had to submit for a transfer from the OLA to the BCLA. Interesting reading. While at Burnaby, his team lost the Minto Cup to Six Nations on September 1, 2007. Six Nations was led by Swarm 2007 draft picks Craig Point and Chris Courtney.

Grimes wore 23 in Arizona. He will have to get a number in Minnesota maybe 15. He will go back to Arizona for the 2009 season.

F-R-Mark Tinning

2005 Mark Tinning on Pointstreak

2007 Mark Tinning on Pointstreak

Born: 5/23/83

Height: 6-1
Weight: 188

Born in: Kitchener, ON

Plays for Kitchener-Waterloo OLA Sr. A

Drafted: Arizona 2nd Round Pick 13 in 2004

Games:3
Goals:2
Assists:2
Points:4

Tinning is a righthander who played on a team stacked with righthanders like Dan Dawson and Craig Conn. In three years, he only got into three games and was on the practice roster for all of 2006. Boston acquired him a trade with Andrew Lazore from Arizona for Mike Grimes, his teammate here in Minnesota, right after the 2007 Expansion Draft.

My guess is he may try to get #48.

So the East breaks down like this:

NY - Adds P Merrill and regains Matt Alrich slight improvement...what happened to Schindler off Bostons list? Can he sign with NY now?

Philly - Adds Blaisdall and a little offense...some improvement, short term...

Buffalo - Craig Conn (won't play in 2008) and some offense...basically stay even

Rochester - Regain Reid, but he didn't play that much...even

Chi - Plunkett, Boyle, Self, Lazore...solid imporvement

Toronto - Add Cam Woods lose Fines...slight improvement

Minnesota - Add Secore, Avery, Grimes and lose Disher who was not playing anyway...solid improvement

Looks like the East will be a dogfight this year, Buffalo and Rochester didn't add much but both return solid teams. Philly, Toronto, and NY address a few issues. Chi and Minnesota make strong gains.

Looks like the East will be a dogfight this year, Buffalo and Rochester didn't add much but both return solid teams. Philly, Toronto, and NY address a few issues.  Chi and Minnesota make strong gains.

Rochester got Alex Smith and if he makes the team as their face off specialist that will free up Stephen Hoar to play defense and transition. That could be very dangerous. They also got one of Boston's first round picks in Lyons and Reid who they lost in the expansion draft is a very physical defenseman.

Buffalo gets Conn who is injured and so is Croswell who may miss significant time also. That may be the reason the following trade was revoked.

Trade Revoked

The other guy, Joe Smith, was basically a practice player for Rochester.

Philly got Blaisdell who will have to return in 2009. Good competition in net with Matt Roik and Jay Preece.

The Rock got Cam Woods earlier in the day in a trade and picked up Curtis Ptolemy, a draft pick from Boston who grew up with Mike Paul, the Swarm's sixth round pick this year and Jon Harasym, the former Swarm righthanded forward.

New York got a solid veteran who can handle face offs in Merrill. Also, they got back Alrich who they lost in the expansion draft and Greg Downing, who was one of Boston's entry draft picks.

The Shamrox really loaded up by getting Kevin Fines from Toronto. Then tonight they drafted Self, Boyle and Hinman who are all veteran defensemen and a strong lefthanded scoring threat in Plunkett. However, all but Boyle go back to Arizona in 2009.

Shamrox helped themselves out short term while New York and Rochester improved long term. Buffalo, Philly and Toronto didn't do much.

Schindler can sign with anyone now, he is a free agent.

The Swarm went young. That's the way Marty likes it.

Our oldest player is Eric Pacey. Grandpa Pacey is only 29 and his birthday isn't until May. (IMG:http://boards.mnswarm.com/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

The backup goaltender battle will be one to watch with Avery and Kevin Croswell. Avery got ripped on the Calgary boards the last couple of seasons but he didn't do too bad last year.

Grimes may be our replacement for Michael Kilby, who just signed with Portland today. At 6-3 210, Grimes should be able to lay the lumber on the opposition.

Secore should give Rory McDade a run for the fourth lefthanded forward on the team.

Tinning; however, will have a tough time cracking the lineup on the right side. Ryan Ward, Sean Pollock and Craig Point are top three. Between Justin Norbraten, Colin Achenbach and Tinning for the fourth spot.

Avery could very well be #2 and we get to keep him. Secore and Grimes go back to Arizona in 2009. Not sure how much Tinning will contribute but you never know.

Secore is very good and may very well give Culp/Hill/Hominuck a run for one of the top three spots.
Avery is a strange pick at 8 but I understand why he was taken at that spot.
Grimes would be a great pick if he could stay with the Swarm and he should fill in for Kemp who may be out this season recovering from his injury.
Tinning has showed glimpses of brilliance in his short career but hasn't played enough to get a good read on him.

All in all solid picks for the Swarm, should be an interesting season.

Avery at #8 - The Swarm have been a goalie factory so far in their young history. I think they must have a pretty good goalie coach (IMG:http://boards.mnswarm.com/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) For this year only, I see the Swarm possibly carrying 3 goalies so they have some more leverage in an expansion draft that likely will have 2 teams plus AZ players returning...
